Dahlias for any garden

Dahlias are so versatile, they deserve a place in every garden. They are the unsurpassed queens of the picking garden, proving time and again that they are excellent garden plants and picking flowers. They continue tirelessly until the first night frost and there is a variety suitable for every garden or location. That is, you have tall and low dahlias. Tall ones do well in the border or picking garden, while the low ones just do very well in a pot or container.

Angelo's choice

I have been growing dahlias for years. They are inseparable from me and I cannot imagine a summer and fall without them. When all other flowers give up, dahlias keep going until the first night frost gives them the so-called "kiss of death. And because I think everyone should have them in the garden, I have put together this fantastic collection. Our dahlias are unique and very special because of their beautiful colors or striking flower shapes. They are all absolute must-haves that should not be missing in your garden. Every dahlia in our assortment I have tried over the years in my own garden. I subject them to strict tests and only then do they appear in our webshop.

Ball, pompon & dinnerplate dahlias

Dahlias come in many forms. They are classified by type and the best known are: ball, pompon and so-called dinnerplate dahlias. The latter are officially called decorative dahlias, but because they are so large, they are thus often sold under that general heading. There are also cactus types, anemone-like, dahlias with open flowers and so on.

Angelo's favorites

Asking what my favorite dahlias are is a bit like picking a favorite child. I really like them all. But I'll give it a shot anyway, because the 65 varieties I selected for this collection are truly gems and deserve to be highlighted. Here are a few tips if you don't know what to choose.

For what purpose do you grow dahlias? Should they perform well as a picking flower, or do you want a garden plant that also keeps pollinators such as bees, bumblebees and butterflies happy? After all, open flowers, which are very important for pollinators, are not suitable as picking flowers. And often the reverse is also true: thick ball or pompom types are not of interest to pollinators, but keep just fine in a vase.

Combine the colors you like, but also dare to provide some contrast. I love pink, by far my favorite color with flowers and especially with dahlias. But planting only pink flowers quickly creates a monotonous effect. Therefore, combine pink for example with slightly darker colors. Dark red and pink, that's a top combination. Or choose only pastel shades, which combine very well with each other.

Each dahlia comes with a different height. So combine the right varieties with each other and keep in mind low ones are better at the front of the border, or do very well in pots and containers.

Dahlias for the picking garden

Because baldahlias, among others, keep very well in a vase, they are excellent picking flowers. And the advantage is that they constantly produce new flowers. They are not suitable for pollinators, but very interesting if you are looking for a flower that is very productive well into autumn. An overview of some must-have varieties.

Dahlias in pots and containers

Not all dahlias are suitable to be grown in pots and containers. Especially the large types are a bit trickier because they blow over quickly and need to be secured. These are better placed at the back of the border or prominently in the picking garden. Dahlias that do really well in pots and containers usually stay small, do not fall over and in most cases have open flowers. Such dahlias are usually not suitable for picking, but obviously highly sought after by pollinators. My favorites:

Straight from the grower

Last summer we went to visit our grower in the Netherlands. Hundreds of varieties are grown there. A carefully compiled selection is shown to you here. All our dahlias, which are grown sustainably, are packed plastic-free in paper bags. The tubers are of absolute top quality and guarantee strong plants.

Limited supply

Because all the dahlias in our collection are so incredibly sought after, we don't have huge quantities of them. We have a limited supply and therefore recommend placing your pre-order quickly. That sounds like a cheap sales pitch, but experience shows that dahlias go very fast very fast, and thus sell out before you know it. Make your choice today thanks to the tips above and secure your favorites for next garden season. Wondering how many plants you can fit per square meter? I put dahlias nice and close together, then you have a full effect in the border or picking garden. At an average distance of 30 centimeters, that concretely means you can put about 5 to 6 plants per square meter.
