This Olla is a porous terracotta pitcher. This model has been used for centuries as a clever way of irrigation. The Olla is buried up to the neck in the soil between plants and you fill with water once or twice a week (depending on drought, temperature and water needs of the plant). The plant roots will grow toward the jar and draw water from it. Because the jar is porous, it slowly releases water to the soil around it when it is dry. When the soil is moist, the water stays in it. The pitcher can be sealed with a cap, thus preventing evaporation and saving up to 70% of your water consumption. Also, the water does not pollute and mosquitoes, for example, cannot reach it to lay their eggs. The Olla is ideal for use in flower boxes, vegetable gardens and greenhouses. The best time to place an Olla is planting time. This allows the roots of the plants to develop optimally toward the Olla. One Olla waters the plants about half a square meter around. We recommend removing the Olla from the ground before the first night frost and keeping it dry and frost-free.
