This Olla is a porous terracotta pitcher. This model has been used for centuries as a clever way of irrigation. The Olla is buried up to the neck in the soil between the plants and filled with water once or twice a week (depending on drought, temperature and water requirements of the plant). The plant roots will grow towards the pot and extract water from it. Because the pitcher is porous, it slowly releases water to the soil around it when it is dry. If the soil is moist, the water will stay in it. The pitcher can be sealed with a cap, preventing evaporation and saving up to 70 % on your water consumption. Also, the water does not pollute and mosquitoes, for example, cannot reach it to lay their eggs. The Olla is ideal for use in window boxes, kitchen gardens and greenhouses. The best time to place an Olla is planting time. This allows the plants' roots to develop optimally towards the Olla. One Olla waters the plants that are about half a square metre around. We recommend removing the Olla from the ground before the first night frost and keeping it dry and frost-free.
