Aquilega vulgaris 'Nora Barlow'

Acelei, a spring bloomer with a head of character

We here are fond of aquilegia. As children they reminded us of fairies and to this day we find Aquilegia vulgaris a fascinating little plant. By the way, the bees and bumblebees are equally fond of it, so win-win.

AQUILEGIA HAS SPECIAL FLOWERS

When you stumble upon a group of Columbines in the garden, you would swear you can hear the flowers. The flowers have a peculiar bell shape. Because they hang down with their heads, they hide their best part. So occasionally turn one of these flowers over and be amazed at all the details you will see. Akelei exists in different colors and blooms from April to July.

Acelei, back from the road

You could say that Columbine is back from never really being gone. You used to find them in most Flemish and Dutch gardens, but the playful little plant lost its place in the tighter garden designs of recent years. Fortunately, we see many people yielding again to the beauty of many flowers and plants cozy together. And in such a cheerful cottage border, Columbine comes into its own perfectly.

AQUILEGIA VULGARIS 'NORA BARLOW'

The wild Columbine in purple or pink is a classic, but nowadays you can find more special varieties again. In our webshop, for example, we sell seeds of the old variety 'Nora Barlow'. The flower starts at the top with creamy white and ends in deep pink. She is a real bee and bumblebee attractor. The color, her shape, the 'Nora Barlow' is fantastic. We also have the blue-purple variety 'Purple Barlow' in our assortment.

Sowing or buying Akelei?

You can sow Columbinein late summer or fall to have flowers the following spring. The plant sows itself further easily after that, so once you have them in your garden, you can continue to enjoy them. Another option, of course, is to buy plants in the spring. Find a spot in the sun (semi-shade works too) and you're done!
