Cucamelon
This Mexican cucumber grows fine outdoors and needs a rack to climb against. The small fruits look like mini watermelons. The flavour is reminiscent of cucumber with acidity. Try to harvest early, when the fruits are the tenderest. Larger ones are slightly harder and therefore often more suitable for making in.
Sowing instructions
Cucamelons or mouse melons need heat to germinate. It is a dark germinator, so the seeds may be slightly covered with soil. Keep moist, but not wet, as this can encourage mould. Cucamelon germinates quite smoothly at the right temperature, but remains small for a long time afterwards. Only when they stand in place for a while do they really shoot up.
